These are just a few of the rules that the pro may set for himself. On the three or four races left, he will get into his serious handicapping. If he doesn't see something that he believes will give him a good chance of winning, he will pass.
Sometimes two or three days can go by without a bet being made. That's discipline, but it is also following your own strict set of rules, and attempting to make your wagers only when you feel you have an excellent chance of winning.

The novice will rush into a track, bet four or five horses in each race, trying to find reasons to bet every horse, and sometimes be broke by the fifth or sixth race.

An odd thing about professional gamblers, many of them will not bet on every facet of gambling. Many of them concentrate on just one or two categories. They do not spread themselves all over the board. Some concentrate on only one, maybe Poker, maybe Sports, maybe Craps.

Then again, there are those who have five or six different areas in which they like to concentrate. But you can be sure that they are experts in every category.
You may wonder why I mention a professional gambler in a section on Discipline. I am trying to show you the comparison between the pro and the weekly player. Blackjack is a very, very tough game to play. You think it is merely to get as close to 21 as you can, then pray that the dealer breaks?

Thousands of people rush to a casino, and take their best shot with a bankroll that could be put to better use. They get $400 or $500 to the good, and it is still not enough. They want more, and more, and more. No end. And when they do stand to lose, they feel their luck will change back and all control is thrown out the window.
The professional gambler will go into the same casino and have incredibly strict restrictions on how much he will lose on that particular day.
He will also have that all important goal, and when he reaches it, he is absolutely, positively, guaranteed to leave that casino with a profit.

I want you to examine your own gambling methods. Do you know the game as well as the professional? If you don't, then you'd better learn it, if you want to play. If you are a great player, why not put the same strict discipline factor in your repertoire of talents. If the pro can do it, so can you.

I'm not trying to make you a professional gambler. I'm trying to get you to copy some of the traits that they have. If even one tiny bit of advice rubs off on you, it will help perfect your game.

The one thing you should have to be a professional gambler is a strong stomach. It seems every single ballgame, every card game, every horserace, appears to go down to the final tick of the clock. Do you know how many ballgames I have lost on the last shot of the game? Hundreds, and each one is like a Joe Louis smash to the gut. It hurts, and it hurts bad. But you have to put it out of your mind and attack the next game. But those losses do take their toll. Can you put up with that? Think about it! The professional gambler has to.
